Zellige – The Mathematical Mastery of Moroccan Mosaics

On Thursday, July 17, Water Line Designs welcomed design professionals to a CEU Lunch & Learn exploring one of the world’s most enduring tile traditions: Zellige. Hosted at Material Bespoke Stone + Tile, the event focused on timeless craftsmanship, material education, and design history.

Held at Material’s Houston showroom, this one-hour accredited course titled Zellige: The Mathematical Mastery of Moroccan Mosaics offered a deep dive into the history, artistry, geometric principles, and design applications of this centuries-old artform. Lunada Bay Tile led the presentation, highlighting the intersection of beauty, mathematics, modern relevance that defines Zellige in today’s interiors.

What is Zellige? Zellige is a traditional Moroccan mosaic tile crafted by hand from natural clay. Each tile is shaped, glazed, fired using time-honored techniques. Every piece contains slight variations, irregularities, details that reveal its artisanal character.

The CEU explored the origins of Zellige, its architectural legacy, the manufacturing process using hand-chiseled forms, the mathematical precision of Moroccan patterns and modern interior applications such as feature walls, backsplashes, and bathrooms.

The event gathered Houston-based architects, designers, and builders in a relaxed, interactive environment. The experience included lunch, material samples, conversations about craft, specification, and project application. Water Line Designs extends appreciation to Lunada Bay Tile for sharing insight, knowledge, and expertise. Thank you to all the attendees who contributed thoughtful dialogue, design energy, and professional curiosity.
